North Shore Modern Sanctuary
North Shore Modern Sanctuary
Duluth, MN
Set in Duluth, Minnesota, this residential landscape was designed to reflect and elevate the home’s modern, monolithic architecture. Built on the site of an older home with no existing landscape, the project began as a blank canvas—offering the opportunity to create a cohesive outdoor environment from the ground up.
The primary goal was to develop a landscape that matched the clean, contemporary lines of the home while standing up to the harsh wind exposure typical of the North Shore. To achieve this, the design focuses on a restrained, monoculture-inspired planting strategy—layered masses of hardy, wind-tolerant grasses, shrubs, and trees that create both visual rhythm and natural protection. These plantings form a soft, organic buffer that contrasts the home’s strong geometry while enhancing privacy and resilience.
A premium artificial turf lawn introduces a crisp, low-maintenance green space, framed by precisely defined curves and clean edging that reinforce the project’s architectural intent. Slate is used throughout for retaining elements and accents, grounding the design with natural texture that complements the home’s material palette.
Outdoor living was a key component of the project. A custom aluminum powder-coated kitchen with a modern grill anchors the entertainment space, while a Paloform fire feature creates a warm focal point for gathering. Integrated irrigation ensures long-term sustainability and plant health, even in challenging conditions.
The focus remained on quality, cohesion, and performance. The result is a refined, modern landscape that not only complements the home but enhances the way it lives—delivering a durable, visually striking environment that the client is thrilled to call their own.
