Designed to Entertain
Duluth, MN
Perched above the surrounding landscape, this Duluth property was transformed from an underutilized, drainage-prone lawn into a fully realized outdoor living environment designed for year-round entertaining. The goal was to create a space that felt original to the home—seamlessly blending with its mid-century cottage character rather than appearing as a modern addition.
The result is a layered outdoor retreat that balances structure, warmth, and functionality. A custom pergola with integrated sliding shades defines the main gathering area, offering both sun control and architectural presence. Beneath it, a thoughtfully organized layout accommodates dining, cooking, and lounging, all anchored by a cohesive material palette.
Natural stone elements—including a Valders stone fireplace and built-in kitchen—bring a sense of permanence and craftsmanship, while cut New York bluestone patios and Unilock Basalt borders introduce contrast and refinement. Artificial turf joints soften the hardscape geometry, improving drainage while adding visual texture.
Designed for all-season use, the space incorporates electric heaters, integrated lighting, and multiple focal points for gathering. A fully equipped outdoor kitchen with Wolf appliances and a pizza oven elevates the entertaining experience, while built-in seating and planters enhance comfort and usability.
What was once a problem area is now a destination—an elevated terrace that feels timeless, intentional, and perfectly in tune with the home’s original architecture.
