Lake Vermilion Retreat
Lake Vermilion Retreat
Tower, MN
Nestled along the shores of Lake Vermilion, this custom landscape was designed to transform a previously wooded lot into a welcoming, multi-functional outdoor retreat for family and guests. The homeowners envisioned a space where kids could play, adults could relax, and everyone could gather comfortably year after year—and that vision drove every detail of the design.
The project centered around creating a seamless connection between the log home and the lake, using natural materials and flowing layouts that complement the surrounding environment. Expansive patios built with Belgard Mega-Arbel pavers in Ashbury Haze and Rochester Minnetonka in Beechwood tones establish warm, durable gathering spaces that feel both refined and rustic.
A standout feature is the thoughtfully designed patio system, which includes a dedicated hot tub nook for privacy and relaxation, along with boulder seat stones that provide natural, built-in seating around gathering areas. The use of New York bluestone stepper slabs helps guide movement through the landscape while maintaining an organic, natural flow toward the water.
To address the challenges of building on a wooded site, the team implemented strategic drainage solutions, including a beautifully integrated dry river bed that not only manages water effectively but also enhances the visual character of the space. Carefully placed boulders and evergreen plantings anchor the design, creating structure while preserving the natural Northwoods feel.
What was once woodland is now a sustainable, inviting lakeside environment designed for entertaining, relaxing, and making lasting memories—perfectly suited for anyone who loves spending time outdoors.
