Island Lake Retreat
Island Lake Retreat
Fredenberg, MN
This residential lake home project began with a challenging landscape that was limiting both the function and safety of the property. The existing space consisted of aging wood structures, broken concrete stairs, and an outdated patio that no longer met the needs of the homeowner. Steep grade changes and drainage concerns created additional complications, making access difficult and reducing the usability of the outdoor space.
Before focusing on aesthetics, the priority was to rework the structure of the landscape to ensure long-term stability and safe movement throughout the property. Elevation changes were addressed through a series of strategically designed retaining walls and transitions, allowing for proper drainage while creating defined, usable levels across the site.
With the foundational challenges resolved, the project evolved into a complete outdoor living transformation centered around entertaining. The goal was to create a space that felt natural to the home—something that looked original rather than newly added—while maximizing functionality and comfort.
The main living area was designed as a fully integrated outdoor environment. A custom outdoor kitchen, built with powder-coated aluminum for durability, serves as a central feature for cooking and gathering. Adjacent to the kitchen, a custom Paloform fire feature creates a natural focal point, anchoring the space and providing warmth and ambiance. Multiple seating areas were incorporated throughout the design, allowing for both large gatherings and more intimate settings, all oriented to take advantage of the lake views.
Material selection played a key role in achieving a cohesive, modern rustic aesthetic. A combination of Techo-Bloc products was used to introduce texture and contrast while maintaining a natural feel. Borealis steps in Smokey Pine establish strong transitions between elevations, while Antika pavers in Chestnut Brown and Charcoal provide a timeless foundation. Borealis plank pavers in Hazelnut Brandy and Blu 60 in Champlain Grey were incorporated to add variation and visual interest throughout the space.
River stone was used extensively on retaining walls and vertical surfaces, tying the entire project back to the surrounding environment and reinforcing the cabin-style character of the home. Integrated lighting throughout the landscape enhances both safety and atmosphere, extending the usability of the space into the evening hours.
The completed design seamlessly connects the home to the landscape, transforming a previously unusable slope into a fully functional, high-end outdoor retreat. Every element—from access and drainage to materials and layout—was carefully considered to ensure the space performs as well as it looks.
This project represents a complete transformation, turning a difficult lakeside property into a refined, cohesive environment built for entertaining and long-term enjoyment.
